The Profit Margin: October 26, 2026
Statistic of the Week
The toy industry is no longer just for kids. Adults buying for their own enjoyment are an increasingly important source of demand in the roughly $46 billion U.S. market. Households without children accounted for 55% of toy sales in the first half of 2026. The trend extends beyond toys: a Harris Poll found that among adults who participated in playful activities over the previous year, 65% spent at least $100 in one category, while 13% spent $500 or more. Stress relief and nostalgia appear to be key motivations.
Global Perspective
Oil prices climbed to their highest levels in nearly six months as renewed tensions in the Middle East raised concerns about energy supplies. Brent crude settled Friday at $116.72 per barrel for December delivery, while West Texas Intermediate closed at $103.27. Iran-backed Houthi attacks targeted Saudi airports and oil infrastructure last week. President Trump also raised the prospect of renewed strikes against Iran after the November midterm elections, adding to uncertainty across energy markets.

Commentary
Volatility accelerated across asset classes last week as oil prices climbed amid concerns over escalating hostilities between the U.S., Israel, Saudi Arabia and Iran and their Houthi allies. While oil prices rose (see “Global Perspective”), Treasury yields moved lower. The 10-year Treasury yield declined eight basis points to 5.00%, retreating from levels that had recently approached two-decade highs.1 Equity markets delivered mixed results. The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 0.41%,2 while the S&P 500 declined 0.47%, marking its second consecutive weekly loss and leaving the index below its closely watched 50-day moving average.3 The Nasdaq Composite fared worse, falling 0.71%.4 More notably, the technology-heavy index has declined 5.2% over the past two weeks,5 a significant development as several major AI hyperscalers prepare to report earnings this week.
The FOMC is scheduled to announce its next interest rate decision on Wednesday. While markets anticipate that the Fed will hold rates steady at this meeting, expectations favor a rate hike in December.6 At its September meeting, the Fed raised the federal funds target range to 3.75%–4.00%, its first increase in more than three years.7 Since then, inflationary pressures have continued to build. Additional inflation data will arrive after the Fed announcement with the release of September’s PCE Price Index Thursday. Headline PCE inflation is expected to rise 0.5% for the month and 3.7% year over year.8 With the report following the FOMC decision, investors will be particularly attentive to the Fed’s statement and Chair Warsh’s press conference for hints of future shifts.
Chart of the Week

Initial jobless claims fell to 194,000 for the week ended October 17, below expectations and the lowest reading since July. The report suggests layoffs remain limited, offering a measure of stability in a labor market where hiring has slowed.
